Dear Parents:
As I am sure you have read in the paper or heard on the news, reported incidents of Swine Flu are increasing. The Governor has issued a statewide response to prevent further spread of the disease. All Santa Cruz County school districts and the County Office of Education are working closely with our local Public Health Department to develop our countywide preventative response. No cases have, as yet, been identified in Santa Cruz County. However, anyone with flu-like symptoms should not go to school. If someone is symptomatic and they have had recent travel to areas with confirmed cases including Mexico, they should contact their health care provider via phone. DO NOT go directly to your health care provider – CALL FIRST. This warning is to prevent further spread of infection. Health care providers have received information and are prepared to provide guidance.
Currently the recommendation is to focus on prevention; the following are basic health hygiene habits:
· Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
· Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
· Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
· If you get sick with the flu, it is recommended that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.
· Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.
· If you are ill – stay at home.
The Center for Disease Control recommends the following things you can do
around your house to prevent the spread of flu:
· Use disposable paper towels or sanitizer wipes to clean things.
· Clean and disinfect the countertops and tables regularly—especially before and after meals.
· Clean bathroom sinks and toilet bowls regularly.
· Clean and disinfect electronic devices including: computer mouse, telephones and cell phones, TV remotes, etc.
· Wipe down doorknobs regularly.
· Be sure that each family member uses only his / her own toothbrush.
· Replace the toothbrushes of family members who have been ill with a cold or the flu.
· Instruct all family members to wash their hands well.
· Instruct family members NOT to use the same glasses or forks or spoons to share food.
