Principal's Letter
Dear BCE Family Members,Tomorrow, Wednesday April 22, is a restructured day. Students in grades 1 through 5 will be dismissed at 12:50 p.m.
STAR testing is scheduled for the weeks of April 27 and May 4. This is standardized testing mandated by the state of California to assess student proficiency in relation to state standards. The assessments are for students in grades 2-5 in the areas of English Language Arts (ELA) and Math. Additionally, the 4th grade has already completed a writing assessment and the 5th grade will be assessed in science.
While testing is a sample of student learning, we use the results at a multitude of levels to help improve and guide instruction. We look at the overall school performance to determine areas of strengths and needs for improvements. We look at the scores within grade levels to improve and expand curriculum. Finally, we look at individual scores as one of the factors in determining needs for support and enhancement programs.
So, while your child’s individual score is a measure of a sample of what they know, the overall and group scores are tools used to support the school’s forward movement. I encourage you to support your child in understanding that he/she needs to do his/her personal best during the testing time as it helps everyone in the school. Please try not to schedule appointments or trips during this time. If you have to schedule an appointment, please try to get one in the afternoon.
The Parent Club has once again donated snacks for students to have during testing, but they run out quickly. If you would like to supplement these snacks in your child’s classroom, please contact his/her teacher. Your support is appreciated.
This Friday, April 24, is the last Bingo Night of the year. It will be held outdoors (indoors if raining) and features a BBQ. Dinner starts at 5:30 p.m. and Bingo starts at 6:30 p.m. We are still in need of adult and student prizes. If you have some new or gently used items that you would like to donate, please drop them off in the office before the end of school on Friday.
Thank you to all of the families who have donated food items or money toward supporting Breakfast Club. The donations have provided a big boost to the dwindling supplies. Continued donations are needed and appreciated.
Sad News…there will not be a downtown parade before the carnival this year. With the rules and regulations, it would cost $1500 to close down the highway. Carnival and parade organizers are working on an alternative plan.
Please visit the Mountain Art Center in Ben Lomond between now and May 9 to view artwork submitted by local students.
Parents of fifth graders, there will be a sixth grade parent information night on Wednesday, April 29 at 6 p.m. in the SLV Middle School gym. Hear about the Middle School programs, meet the teachers and have your questions answered.
Fifth graders, you are cordially invited to attend Open House at SLV Middle School on Thursday, May 7. There will be a pizza dinner, silent auction, bake sale, book faire, band concert and talent show. Phew! Classrooms will be open from 6:30 pm until 7:45 pm. Go and see your new school!
Congratulations to Sequoia Andrade and Jonathan Rose for placing in the top three of their respective divisions at the County Science Fair. Thank you to all of the students who represented BCE at the Science Fair. Also, special thanks to Ms. Osharow and Ms. Verhage for coordinating the efforts of these scientists.
Mrs. Wels and Mrs. Steinberg have asked me to remind you to make sure that your students are wearing shoes appropriate for PE on his/her PE days.
Administrative Assistant Day is tomorrow, April 22. Please join me in thanking Lorna Gutierrez, Margaret Zavaroni, Alma Steinberg and Judy Wels for all that they do in the office to keep this school running as smoothly as possible. They are the best!
