Principal's Letter Tuesday, March 17, 2009
Dear BCE Family Members,
Please bear with me as this message includes a great deal of information that I will list in bulleted points.
- Free e-waste collection event at San Lorenzo Elementary School this Saturday (3/21) from 9am-4pm. They will accept TV’s, computers, microwaves, stereo components, phones, DVD players, VCR’s, etc. This is a fundraiser for SLV Middle School.
- However, if you have a computer monitor in excellent working condition (and not too bulky), we are in need. You can drop one off in the office.
- Family Dinner Night at Red Pearl tomorrow (3/18). Proceeds will benefit the 5th grade.
- The Breakfast Club is in dire need of food or monetary donations. We serve breakfast to over 50 students per day at an approximate cost of $400 per month. We need your help to keep this valuable program running.
- Tomorrow (3/18) is an EARLY OUT DAY. All students in grades 1-5 will be dismissed at 12:50 pm. There are no more early out days until April 22.
- The second trimester ended last Friday and Report Cards will go home this Friday (3/20).
- On March 24 and 25, fifth grade students will be taking the 2009 California Healthy Kids Survey mandated by the California Department of Education. This survey is designed to help school districts meet requirements that promote a comprehensive school health and prevention program. The survey is about the use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs, bullying and violence, and what you do at school and how you feel about it. If you do not want your 5th grade child to participate, please contact Mrs. Gutierrez at lgutierrez@slvusd.org or 338-6413. The survey is available for review in our office.
- The state budget crisis continues….The district’s goal is to keep cuts away from students. Class size reduction is in place for next year. At this point, we also are maintaining PE, science and computer lab programs for next year. Due to the factors of declining enrollment and an uncertain budget, 10 teachers throughout the district have received lay-off notices. Some will be rehired as funding becomes more certain. Recommendations for cuts of classified staff have been presented to the school board and will be voted on during tomorrow night’s school board meeting. I will let you know what the cuts entail as soon as they are finalized. As many of you know, it is a heart wrenching process.
- It is a tough time financially for many of our families. In the past month, we have had at least 4 families move out of our school community because of financial reasons. Circumstances change and I want you all to be aware of some of the financial support we can provide our students. Our dinner nights raise money to help support field trips. If your child has an upcoming field trip that has a cost and finances are tight, please contact your child’s teacher and let him/her know. We want all students to attend all field trips. Also, if your financial circumstances have changed, your child may be eligible for free lunch. Pick up a form in the office or call Student Nutrition Services at 335-5384 for additional information.
- Community support services are also available to families in need. Please contact Mountain Community Resources (335-6600) or Valley Churches United ( 336-5651) to see what services they offer.
We know from past experiences that we are a community that pulls together to support each other. These are tough and stressful times for many families and their students. Let’s work together to support our neighbors.
