Dear BCE Families,
Thank you for your quick response and communication through our telephone tree this morning. We were able to get the word out and close school within an hour. I want to commend the staff, Santa Cruz Sheriff’s Department and Boulder Creek Fire Dept. for working together to secure our campus.
The teachers and I spent the day planning for welcoming your children back to school tomorrow. At this point we don’t have much information as the school campus has been blocked off for the investigation.
Here’s what we know:
- At approximately 7:00 am this morning, a man was found dead on our campus.
- Authorities were called immediately.
- The telephone tree was initiated.
- The sheriff’s department closed the campus to conduct an investigation. All teachers worked on campus throughout the day.
- School will open tomorrow morning as usual.
Our school psychologist and counselor will be available throughout the day tomorrow and the rest of the week to meet with any students who need additional support. Also, Superintendent Julie Haff and Sgt. Jim Ross from the SC Sheriff’s Dept. will meet with adult family members at 8:30 am in the MP room tomorrow to answer questions and address any concerns.
Teachers are prepared to talk with their classes as appropriate, but plan to go on with the regular school day. A normal schedule and routine is one of the best ways to support feelings of safety within a child.
Different children will have different responses, based on age, personal experience and level of exposure to the situation (i.e., media reports, adult conversations). Please reassure your child that the school is a safe place to be and the incident was not school related in any way.
